This is a reference to use while giving feedback. You do not need to address every question nor stay within their confines. It’s a non-exhaustive list that simply serves as a guide!
Questions to ask:
Overall Impression
- What part of the story captivated you the most?
- Was there anything you strongly disliked?
- How would you describe this story to someone else? What was the main theme?
- Would you recommend this story to others? Why or why not?
- Did the story evoke any emotions in you?
- Did the story fit the genre?
- Was the writing prompt used as an integral part of the story?
Beginning & End
- Did the story hook you from the beginning?
- Did you quickly understand who the main character was and where the story was set?
- Did you find the conclusion satisfying and believable?
Characters & Dialogue
- Were the characters 3-dimensional? Did they show both flaws and strengths?
- Were you able to keep track of who was who?
- Did you find their actions and reactions to be logical/realistic?
- Did you empathize with their emotions?
- Did you find the dialogue to be authentic?
- Who was your most/least favorite character and why?
Plot, Conflict & Pacing
- Was the plot easy to follow? Were there any parts that left you confused?
- Were any parts too predictable?
- Was the conflict clear? Was the protagonist’s problem clear?
- Did the story maintain your interest throughout?
- Did it feel too slow in any areas?
- What was the most exciting moment in the book?
Setting & Worldbuilding
- Did you find the setting intriguing? Would you have liked to see more of it?
- Did the details of the world feel naturally introduced or explained? Any info-dumping?
- Did the chosen words transport you to the time period or world?
- Were there too many terms created by the writer that left you confused? Were there not enough for the setting and genre?
Writing Craft
- Was there anything about the writing style that was distracting?
- Did you think there was more showing than telling?
- Did you find the style suited the genre?
- Did the imagery add or subtract to this piece of writing?
- Was the point of view and tense consistent throughout the story?
